How to measure pop-up sprinkler height

Customer Service Reps at Sprinkler Supply Store are available Monday – Friday, 9am to 5pm, eastern time.  Our support technicians are experienced with lawn and garden sprinklers of all types, size, models, and manufacturers.

One of our most frequently asked questions is, how do I measure the size of my sprinkler?

Don’t Stress, this is very easy!

The size of a sprinkler is determined by the height of the riser.  The image above illustrates how to measure the riser, also known as the part that  “pops-up”.  DO NOT measure the size of the entire sprinkler (this includes the plastic bottom cylinder).

Below are the standard sizes for both “sprays” and “rotors”.

Common Pop-Up Spray Sizes

  • 2″
  • 3″
  • 4″ (most common in lawns)
  • 6″
  • 12″ (most common in flower beds)

Common Rotor Sizes

  • 4″ (most common)
  • 5″ (Toro & K-Rain)
  • 6″
  • 12″

Remember, it is the length of the “riser” that determines which size sprinkler you have or need to replace.

Have you been thinking about investing in a valve box lately? If you have, you are not alone.

Rain Bird Jumbo Valve Box

SprinklerSupplyStore.com has had an abundance of valve box sales lately.  After more research we know exactly why people want these as an important part of their irrigation system. This post has detailed  information for someone who is thinking of installing a valve box.

Why valve boxes?‘ you ask.  According to Robin Westmiller, President of Green Industry Speakers Bureau, “First and most importantly, the box secures the valve in a clean environment, and prevents damage to the wires. Additionally, if you have to service the valve, it’s easier to work on.”

Overall, valve boxes are extremely easy to install and they will save you money and headache in the long-run. They prevent wires being cut, damage to the external part of the valve, and they keep the valve from sitting in soil year-round (which does not help valve performance).   To get a better “how-to” on installing your new valve box read this .

As always, if you have any questions about valve boxes or installing them, do not hesitate to contact the Sprinkler Supply Store team at 1-888-787-5977 or email us your question at info@sprinklersupplystore.com

Deciding on ‘weather’ to invest in a Freeze Sensor?  This information may influence your decision.

Irrigation Freeze Sensors

Pictured are two models Sprinkler Supply Store.com carries among many, many others. (Pictures courtesy of Hunter Industries and Rain Bird)

There are many different freeze sensors that are readily available for your needs.    There are rain sensors, freeze sensors, rain & freeze sensor combos, wireless, battery-operated, and the list goes on.  On most models you are able to set your own rainfall and/or temperate set points, which will help save you worry and your wallet. When the sensor detects freezing temperatures it will automatically shut-down your irrigation system and will allow the scheduled program when temperatures are decent again. Freezing can damage any landscape overnight.  A burst pipe can be very costly as well as a huge headache.  Most people live in an unpredictable environment. One day may be sunny and 75, and the night be 30 below.  If this sounds like you, investing in a freeze sensor may be your new best friend and peace of mind.

If there are any questions about these products, please feel free to call our friendly techs at 888-787-5977 or contact them at info@sprinklersupplystore.com

Welcome to a New Understanding of Your Light Bulb

LED vs Traditional Incandescent Light Bulbs

The latest light bulb ban was in the beginning of 2013 with the 75-watt “traditional” incandescent bulbs. Coming in January 2014, these same regulations will go into effect for 60- and 40-watt incandescent bulbs as well.

No Fear! Replace them with compact florescent, halogen incandescent or LED.  Before you replace them, here’s a bit of advice when choosing a new light bulb for your landscaping.

Though traditional incandescent bulbs may seem less expensive, the CFL and LED offer a much longer lifespan (8,000-25,000 hours vs. 1000 hours) and save immense amounts of energy, in turn, saving you money. “Whereas a 60-watt incandescent, 13-watt CFL and 11-watt LED bulb all give out a comparable level of light in lumens (800 to 900), the energy used is substantially less” (Heinzen York, 2013).

Get ready for the new standard in reading light bulb packages.  The new way to read your light bulb labels will be in lumens, which is the actual measure of light.  Watts is a measure of energy – not light. The chart below compares about how much light is emitted from the amount of energy (watts).

Watts VS Lumens Chart

More Important Facts:

  • CFL bulbs have mercury in them. (LEDs and halogen incandescent do not)
  • LEDs are soon going to be by far the most energy-efficient source”, Rey-Barreau, architect, lighting designer, and associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Design.
  • Halogen lighting does not meet the “high-efficacy standards”.
  • LEDs are currently available at the 100 lumen per watt level.
